LONDON and NEW YORK, 28 January 2009 -- Jefferies International Limited, the UK subsidiary of US-based Jefferies Group, Inc. (NYSE: JEF), today announced the expansion of the Firm’s global healthcare equities practice with the hiring of seven research and sales professionals in London. James Dodwell, Dr. Jeffrey Holford and Ian Hilliker join as analysts to cover the Pharmaceutical industry, and Peter Welford, Dr. Philippa Gardner and Dr. Tara Shivarattan will be covering Biotechnology, Biopharmaceuticals and Life Sciences. Thomas Bedford also joins in the capacity of a Healthcare Specialist Salesman.

The new European teams will work closely with Jefferies’ US Healthcare Research Analysts Peter Bye (Medical Devices & Diagnostics), Arthur Henderson (Healthcare Services), Richard Close (Healthcare IT Services), David Windley, CFA, CPA (Pharmaceutical Services & Specialty Pharmaceuticals), Eun Yang, PhD (Biotechnology) and Marko Kozul, MD (Biotechnology). Jefferies’ worldwide coverage of the Healthcare sector now comprises 13 analysts following equity and high yield securities.

James Dodwell joins as a Senior Equity Research Analyst covering the broader European Pharmaceutical sector. He has more than twenty years of industry experience, and was most recently co-head of the top-ranked Pharmaceutical Research team at Credit Suisse, where he spent 12 years. He holds a BA in Chinese Studies with Economics from the University of Leeds.
Dr. Jeffrey Holford joins as a Senior Equity Research Analyst covering European Pharmaceutical companies. Prior to Jefferies, he also co-headed the top-ranked Pharmaceutical Research team at Credit Suisse, and previously was Head of Citigroup’s European Biotechnology Equity Research coverage. Before his career in financial services, he spent several years working in drug development with AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers and Novartis. He received a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology from The University of London and holds a first class honours degree in Biochemistry from The University of Surrey. Dr. Holford is ACA qualified.
Ian Hilliker joins the Firm as a Marketing Analyst covering the European Pharmaceutical and Healthcare sectors. He has nearly twenty years of buyside and equity research analyst experience, most recently at Credit Suisse, where he was part of the top-ranked Pharmaceutical team. He holds a BSc in Applied Chemistry from Portsmouth Polytechnic.
Thomas Bedford joins as a Healthcare Specialist Salesman. Prior to joining Jefferies, he was a Healthcare Specialist Salesman at Credit Suisse, where he spent nine years and was part of that firm’s top ranked Pharmaceutical team. He was ranked #1 for Biotechnology Specialist Sales and #4 for Pharmaceutical Specialist Sales in the 2008 Extel Survey. He holds a degree in Agricultural Science from Reading University.
Peter Welford joins as a Senior Equity Research Analyst covering the European Biotechnology, Biopharmaceuticals and Life Sciences sectors. He was most recently a biotechnology analyst at Lehman Brothers, where he spent two years and was ranked as the #2 European Biotechnology Analyst in the 2008 Institutional Investor Survey of Research Analysts. He also spent five years at Merrill Lynch as a Biotechnology Analyst. He has a Master’s degree in Chemistry from St. John’s College, Oxford University and is a CFA charterholder.
Dr. Philippa Gardner joins Jefferies as a Research Analyst focused on the European Biotechnology, Biopharmaceuticals and Life Sciences team. Prior to joining Jefferies, she was an equity research associate at Lehman Brothers for more than three years, where she was part of the award-winning Biotechnology equity research team. She holds a Doctorate in Biochemical Engineering from University College London.
Dr. Tara Shivarattan joins Jefferies as a Research Analyst focused on the European Biotechnology, Biopharmaceuticals and Life Sciences team. Prior to joining Jefferies she was an equity research associate at Lehman Brothers, where she was part of the Medical Technology equity research team. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Imperial College.
